People make the mistake of thinking that only the most dominant dogs will exhibit resource guarding and the truth is that both dominant dogs as well as very insecure dogs can have the same problems. Dogs tend to resource guard people, places or things and the most common reason a dog will bite or show aggression is mainly for food or toys. Some signs of resource guarding can be growling, showing teeth, intense stare or hackles. Dogs might also stand over food or toys or crouch behind them. There are some cases where the dog will not show any signs and will bite someone. It's important to always move the dog away from the food or toys and in doing so we can avoid a sudden aggressive act.
